My 2 cents on the current meta displayed during the CoH2 Master League. What's your opinion?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 03:52 AM PDT

Hey guys, I wanted to open a discussion about the current meta displayed during the CoH2 master league. Feel free to comment on my opinions and express your own thoughts about the current state of the game.

To begin with, I'd like to talk about the Axis meta and 2 of the most obvious pressing issues, that being: OKW not getting picked at all and OST doctrinal choices

    1) OKW wasn't picked for a single game during the upper and lower bracket semi-finals, finals and grand finals. That seems pretty ironic considering that this is the 3rd most upvoted post on this subreddit during the last month (the other 2 being meme posts). Why i think this is the case is because OST is a way more of a well-rounded faction at the moment. OKW in general just feels really weak past the first 5 minutes of the game, unless they go for Mechenized Regiment which usually ends up delaying their medium armor by quite a bit, while they don't have an efficient healing option unless they decide to backtech for Battlegroup Headquaters or go for Feursturm doctrine and the Opel Blitz truck. On the other hand, OST can tech for their medium armor faster than any other faction and medium armor seems to be the king of the mid/late game with all the nerfs heavy tanks have recieved in the patch 2 months ago.

    2) The only doctrines that were really picked for OST were: Osttruppen, Defensive (which is basically Osttruppen vol 2.), German Infantry and Mechanised Assault. You might notice a common theme about all of these doctrines. They all have a way of either replacing or upgrading the basic non-doctrinal grenadiers, who are in my opinion the worst mainline infantry in the game, but once they get upgraded with 5 man squads or replaced by Assault Grenadiers or Osttruppen accompanied by Panzergrenadiers it eliminates a big portion of the faction's weaknesses.

As for the Allied factions, I feel like the Brits were overnerfed during the last mini-patch and we've barely seen any of them. USF seems like the most well rounded Allied faction at moment, while the Soviets have very little variety in their build orders.

The USF meta seems to by dominated by the Mechanized Company. It was the only doctrine picked by USF in all 7 games of the grand finals in which USF participated in. It might just be down to the personal preferences of Kimbo and Luvnest, or it might be because the doctrine has the best toolbox for dealing with the current meta doctrines for OST.

The Soviets just feel like they're in a very weird spot in the moment. The only player who has had significant succes with them is BartonPL, who just builds 3 ZiS guns and keeps spamming T-70s. Their build variety seems to be pretty bad. Everything seems to be about the Conscripts, with the Penals being completely ignored. Shock Troops are also highly prefered over the Guards as the elite infantry choice. T-70 feels like a crutch that they have to rely on to keep their head above the water during the early/mid game and even then, the OST medium armor usually comes out just 3-4 minutes after the T-70.

What do you think about the current meta, and what balance changes would you introduce if you had the chance to?

So obviously CoH2 has a botstomping community in Skirmish, but I can never find teammates for the co-op Theater of War missions, which I'd like to complete for the honor of my descendants.

    Appreciation post: OST stormtrooper

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 03:03 PM PDT

IMO, the best designed infantry unit in the game. They are squishy & expensive but masters of stealth, move fast, hit hard and reward patience & planning - two things it seems that the game is losing more of with each and every patch. Stormtrooper are fun because they embody of tactics & strategy, making the game feel more like an RTS and less like a slugfest. Also, the history behind these units is fascinating. True warriors.

How to make rifle company more popular?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 08:09 PM PDT

Hey guys, so I've had plenty reasonable discussions with people on how rifle company might become a more potent and popular doctrine for the USF. As of now, they have some situational abilities that give riflemen a really good edge over their axis counterparts and support weapons, however, they are pretty expensive and by the time they get unlocked, USF gets other options to deal with the same scenarios. Now these abilities are good, don't get me wrong, but they're not as appealing as different doctrinal abilities (mechanized and heavy cav for instance). IMO rifle company could get an elite unit (a good replacement for the vetted riflemen) at a usual price of 340 MP and 8-9 pop depending on what people might see fit for balancing, and for now let's call them elite riflemen. This unit should consist of a 5 man squad, with emphasis to be given to mid-long range combat and should have a weapons upgrade that increases their mid-long range dps (similar to a g43 rifle). Please let me know y'all's thoughts on this.

P.S - Happy 4th of July to my fellow Redditors from the United States!

Do units in vehicles get a buff?

It seems like whenever I place units in clown cars they do alot more damage then they otherwise would. Am I imagining this or is it true?

    How to get better?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 05:03 PM PDT

I've been playing this game for a couple of years casually, but when I found out that there's tournaments I've become completely obsessed.

How can I get better to participate in these tournaments? Any recommendations, strategies, practice time, etc?

coh2: Which Campaign do you recommend for this playtest?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 01:57 PM PDT

    regular or Ardennes Assault

Looks like someone had a few comments on it https://www.reddit.com/r/CompanyOfHeroes/comments/9rafbf/my_views_on_company_of_heroes_1_and_2_singleplayer/

I can already tell coh2 is better in at least the tactical play part. Don't know about any other RTTs. Nobody really recommended anything. There doesn't seem to be many or any options in RTTs

Don't know if gonna do Dawn2. So I guess after this this whole RTT topic would be done

Here was my Dawn of War 3 playtest results:

Has anyone played Warcraft 3 here? How could a 2017 game be worst than a game made in 2002... ? That doesn't make any sense... I'm so confused. Maybe I'm mistaken?

How could a 2017 game be worst than a game made in 2002... ? That doesn't make any sense... I'm so confused. Maybe I'm mistaken?

    How could a 2017 game be worst than a game made in 2002...... ? ....... ? How.... ?

Has anyone played this game call Dawn of War 3? Can someone play/try out this game call Dawn of War 3? Maybe I'm missing something... ?

basically a worst version of wc3, or maybe I'm mistaken? Am I missing something here... ?

    Starting up / Intro

    • ✔️ good skippable

    Tutorial

    • ≠ did not do, don't know
    • ✔️ able to skip tutorial

    Settings UI

✨ impeccable (above & beyond what's needed): aow planetfall

    • ✨ whoever is lead UI designer of aow planetfall knows what they're doing, very talented
    • ✨ very sure they were lead UI designer of some other major game, software, or w/e else, this person knows what good UI is

    ✔️ [example game]

    = dawn3

    • can't hover over option, have to hover over ? mark meets

    ❌ [example game]

    In-game UI

    ❌ dawn 3

    • when place buildings, doesnt highlight/show where you can/cannot build (like other games do)
      • map highlight: green for where you can, red for where you can't
    • like in mobas, spell/skills should not have too many different radius (makes it hard to play other heroes)
    • ❌ map needs to be larger, take more space
    • should be placed at mid-bottom right, around 70-80% from botton-center
    • ❌ There's so many units, there's no hotkeys to select all units on screen (like other games have)
    • ✔️ right lick with barrack to rally
    • ❌ in mission/quest #2, cannon building cant right click, uses icon instead
    • have to left click button
    • ❌ action usage UI is not centered liek in mobas
    • ✔️ Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus

Useful presentation of in-game Info (Provides helpful info)

✔️ [example game] highest dps, removal of useless data, =

    = dawn3

    • 60 dps
    • ❌ needs to color code info relative to other units in class

    Visual Clarity (graphics)

❌ graphics sux, better pixel style like civ cleaner look

✔️ Enemies easily visible (due to animation)

    Display UX

    • ❌ no zooming
    • ❌ cant zoom in out
    • ❌ view/camera needs to be more top down like in wc3 etc

    Pacing

❌ 2nd campign took so long and there wss nothign even new

    ❌ campaigns takes too long

❌ combat pacing: q takes long time to work, unlike mobas

❌ when there's many units, it's too fast paced to be tactical

    • has to be slower than this, numbers adjusted to do that

    Macro game

    • ❌ macro stuff isn't automated like
      • getting scrap
      • when they come out etc
    • ✔️ all brainless stuff should be automated
    • ❌ all the macro takes away from the tactics

    Flow

❌ In campaign single play, shows 'elite pick' screen even when cant even pick 'elites'

    Difficulty

There's difficulty settings that tells you what is being changed. There's good ways to do difficulty, and there's bad ways (like just stat increases)

    Other UX

✔️ Menu UI (outside of game): can click on skills to see vid of skill like in moba games

❌ doesnt auto save (within a long campaign game, no checkpoints etc)

Keybindings/hotkeys overall bad, can't change, can't select multiple buildings

    Loading screen: has meaningless tips

    ❌ Save doesn't generate title/name

Exit: have to confirm to exit

    Story

    ✔️ Story autoplays itself

    ✔️ Skippable

    ❌ Presentation is garbage

❌ story real bad, looks like you need context background into Warhammer universe to know wtf they talking about

    Universe/theme

    • hate (options: best/like/dislike/hate)

    Sound

    ❌ very bad sound design

❌ too much repetitive sounds + too frequent

❌ too much voice sound noise

❌ distracting bad, very distracting, takes away from the actual game

❌ when clicking on building, it makes same sound, every damn time

    ❌ cant turn off

❌ can't lower, cos cutscene volume was same as 'speech volume' bad

✔️ aow planetfall: can mute/unmute when window not in focus

    Creativity of Ideas

    • ❌ didn't see anything new or interesting

    Tactical?

❌ Eh, this is not really a tactics game, it's just a worst version of wc3 (2002... )

    • too fast paced to be tactical
    • macro takes away from tactics

    Result/Outcome/Conclusion

❌ Complete waste of minutes and hours of my life

Note: There's really zero point listing any of the bads above. All that matters is to look at good games. And learn from the good games. Trash bad games, they don't really matter

    • There may be reviews out there that mentioned good/bads that I hadn't gotten to, didn't see
    • dawn3 has less macro than wc3 from what i saw

    Said by others

    • 2 basically zero macro
    • 2 focuses more on small combat and has no base building
    • 3 is big battles
    • 3 armies are quite a bit bigger
    • Yet the big battles last 2 min until the champions oblitirate the army
    • 2 is very strong elites, very few squads
    • 2 is the most "tactical", but only in multi, and multi is dead, unless you play Elite, which is well, not what it once was... Solo is completely different, and plays like a ARPG/diablo-like. Very fun, but not a RTS or RTT.
    • 2, from managing firing arcs, cover, suppression, lots of unique abilities, vehicles with weak points, tactical retreats, etc, there is a mod for it, called DoW2 ELITE, which re-balances the game (making it way more fun IMO), adds a few units and several awesome army skins. Also highly recommend Company of Heroes 2 as the multiplayer is very, very similar to DoW2 with cover, firing arcs, armor penetration, etc, but it is more grounded since it's a WW2 game
    • 1 regular Relic RTS, very outdated.

    Reached mission #5 - Questions

    1. Should continue? Anything new or interesting that other newer/bettter games haven't done before? Anything worthwhile? Or continue on to better games (and hopefully not worst games)?
    2. DLCs worthwhile? Anything in DLCs new or interesting that other newer/bettter games haven't done before?
    3. Should do Dawn2? Or are there better real time tactics to test?
    4. COH2 up next I guess

Better Tactics Game? Within same universe, or by same company?

My commander change is not saved when I reload back into the menu (note this is also for factions) I have tried clean installs, new drivers and and even different PC's and still have this issue.Has anybody had a similar issue and worked out a fix?
