    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 08:49 PM PST

Hey guys, just got the game after the playing the first years ago. I'm slowly just learning the game and if anyone is interested in playing that would be great. New or a veteran it doesn't matter to me, I just want to play and get better and maybe go online once I do!

    Assault Engineer Theorycrafting

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 11:13 AM PST

Riflemen are really good. They are probably the best among basic line infantry. But I've been thinking. USA is blessed with mortars right out of the gate, much like how the Wehrmacht gets HMG42. And you know what goes well with mortar? Close combat infantry; thanks to the availability of smokes.

This is where Assault Engineers come in. So far, I've found their performance to be satisfying in a mortar + engineer start. It requires some clever micro and is harder to use then good old rifles, but they can overwhelm grenadiers pretty easily. If the enemy happened to get an HMG42, well, the mortar and its smokes are almost a hard counter at that stage in the game.

Later on, they lose their usefulness compared to riflemen... Somewhat. See, they may end up being weaker, but they are far more versatile.

    - They can repair and are even better at it following vet 1.

    - They can build fieldworks, mines, and det charges, though this strat rarely leaves many spare munitions. (I wish they could build tank traps too)

    - They can get flamethrowers to clear out buildings.

    - They are close combat infantry, so they don't lose much firepower if you replace one slot with a bazooka.

The last point I believe is the most interesting aspect to them. A single Bazooka, instead of a BAR, well, why? The why, my friends, is that the Armor Company comes with the wonderful Sherman Bulldozer, which, on top of being well armored and being capable of laying green cover on the move, makes mulch of infantry. Later on, relegating your 3 squads of AE to an everyman role is more useful than making them purely anti-infantry, and the 3 bazookas are often enough to destroy light vehicles or heavily damaged ones.

In brief, dear friends, Assault Engineers with mortar support pull their weight in the early game, and are more versatile than Riflemen later on as they can creep forward with Fighting Positions and mortar support, and even later on, they repair your vehicles, which are excellent with the Armor Company.

OKW rally point question (low quality image sorry) i have 2 converted halftracks and cant get a rally point??

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 12:58 AM PST

This is probably one of the most controversial topics in the game. Why is the MG 42 so strong? Was it always this strong? If not, what's the patch history the resulted in its supremacy?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 04:24 PM PST

I've seen articles that the MG 42 was Hitler's buzzsaw. Alternatively, I've seen articles that the US M1919 was extremely deadly, to articles that the Viker's Machine gun was "one of the best firearms ever made". All of this leads me skeptical to think that one machine gun was definitely "better".

Admittedly, I don't know much about the MG 42's history in reality or its ingame history which is why I'm asking the question.

Yes, I play allies. Yes, its a constant thorn to map control and can stop expansion dead. I've rage quitted over extreme MG42 spam that seems impossible to counter. However, these more reflect my skill as a player rather than it being a powerful weapon.

However purely objectively, it's undeniably the best mg in the game. I just want to know what lead it to being so strong, or if it always was?

Edit: I know it has little DPS, but people get MGs for area of denial and stopping blobs, not killing them. I always have enough time to call in an airstrike and see defenses because it takes machine guns too long to kill. This is why its often considered the best, especially for rapid suppression.

Doctrines that can be useful in Challenges

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 09:35 AM PST

I've tried to search for this with very weak results, so sorry if it's obvious to the regulars here. Recently, my friend and I have been trying out the co-op challenges as a change of pace. We are both super casuals and almost exclusively do comp stomps with mods and custom maps nowadays, but this has started to get boring. Neither one of us likes competitive play so the co-op Challenges seemed like just the ticket.

Although the challenges strongly suggest the default doctrines (my understanding is that it's because some other doctrines have units/powers that are disabled b/c of the year the challenges take place), I did try a more defensive doctrine for one of the scenarios with great (and, more importantly, fun) results. Even though I couldn't build one of the units, the other abilites more than made up for it.

So, what I'm looking for is info regarding which other doctrines work well for the challenges (even if a units is disabled here or there but the doctrine is still useful). I'd prefer to avoid loading up a game for each doctrine and teching up to find out on my own if I can help it, and I'm hoping there might be other people that have already covered this ground and can offer some tips.

Soviet Tips for Company of Heroes 2

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 08:44 AM PST

I'm planning on getting a gaming laptop sometime in the future and Company of Heroes 2 is a game I want for it. I want to play Soviets but I'm unsure about how I would use them and their doctrines. Any help?

EDIT: No I'm not a tankie if anyone asks because of my username which I regret choosing.
