    Vote for updated commander portraits!

    Posted: 02 Apr 2021 09:03 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

Our fantastic UI modders have created an updated commander portraits pack. You can find more detailed information (all the new portraits) here: https://www.coh2.org/topic/105654/adjusted-commander-portraits

    As a summary:

1.) most commanders received a visual update, more in line with their theme. See examples below:

    https://www.coh2.org/file/19569/comparison-1.png

    https://www.coh2.org/file/19571/comparison-3.png

2.) Certain commanders received a more standardised look based on the main abilities in their respective doctrine, that should make them more easily recognizable. See the example below for Tiger and Guards commanders:

    https://www.coh2.org/file/19570/comparison-2.png

While we're working on the commanders patch, we're looking to potentially implement these portraits alongside it. If it was possible, would you like to see these updated commander portraits in the live game? Vote away!

*Do not that Relic obviously still has the final say on this, and that it's ultimately their call whether or not they want to update their original art.

2021 Commander Patch Preview - Commander Changes and USF - Notes Review and Change Demonstrations

    Posted: 02 Apr 2021 01:01 PM PDT

    For the next patch...

    Posted: 02 Apr 2021 03:12 PM PDT

I feel that unit changes can be set aside for the next year. Based on past experiences, games can be balanced to death, where they lose their identity. This game is gardening solid. Has been for the last two years.

Maybe the next patch could be all about maps, with some commander reworks. I have no idea how difficult it to balance maps (maybe it's more difficult than working on factions) but it'd be great to see the map pool double. There's a lot of cool community maps out there.

Do you guys think that at least some of this contentious balancing discussion comes from the player base being too familiar with the current map roster.

The new Scott is absolutely BRUTAL

    Posted: 02 Apr 2021 12:37 PM PDT

Hey guys, it's me, the recon support company dude. I made a post / guide on said company a few months ago. Basically I praised pathfinder utilizing tactics and also briefly touched upon the M8A1 Scott.

Now I'm curious to see, what's the community's current opinion on said unit. I'll go first:

I think the new Scott is absolutely BRUTAL. In the previous patch the barrage mode was useless, so you had to resort to using the auto-attack to inflict damage (which was pretty respectable), but the range on that left something to be desired. That meant that the scott couldn't properly counter team weapons and especially at guns. The smoke barrage however was great, and I praised it to great lengths on my previous post.

But now, holy shit! The new barrage mode is absolute carnage, especially with double scotts (which imo is the only proper way to inflict true pain with scotts). Currently the scatter is so tight (and the amount of rounds fired) is so good, that two of them will reliably wipe any team weapons about 90% of the time, if they dont retreat immediately. The default range is also great, well away from any danger eg at guns and tank destroyers.

And I absolutely love the fact that the two barrages are on separate cooldowns. With double scotts you can pretty much smoke your enemy's team weapons indefinitely, when you take turns between them. Nowadays I rarely bother with wiping enemy's mgs with the barrage, but rather just smoke 'em, and rush infantry through. That tactic is usually much quicker, than wait on the barrage to run its course.

In fact, the scott in its current state is so good, that I don't even miss CalliOP. In my opinion, the only thing that the Calliope is better at is wiping blobs. If the enemy is going heavy camping strategy with team weapons (and knows how to space them out even somewhat), the scott is infinitely better choice. With the cooldown bulletin, the scott can keep constant pressure on your enemy's defensive line, unlike with regular rocket artillery you get these long cooldowns, which really slow your game down. With the scott, you can keep constant aggression on.

For those who are curious, I'm currently USF 2v2 randoms rank 14 and I exclusively abuse pathfinders, double scotts and double jacksons (and of course lots of m20 mines). I can't even remember, when's the last time I build a Sherman... Preferred doc nowadays airborne comp over recon support.

I'm also curious to hear opinions on the axis players side on the new scott.

    Post number 2 😅

Please feel free to add the other commanders! I'm just going to post Rifle, Armor, and Mechanized as I feel those are the ones that could use full on ability/passive swaps or replacements. As well as general changes because there were a lot.

If you care about the format for uniformity's sake simply put a hashtag in front of the first word with no space in between and everything in that line will be bold and caps.

The community interaction is still leaving something to be desired.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2021 12:19 PM PDT

First of all, let me say I am thankful to high heavens that my favorite game still has an active community and it's still receiving updates. I know many of you out there agree that there is nothing close to CoH2 besides it's predecessor (and perhaps Dawn of War 2).

However, the recent proposed patch has really made me ask some questions. Number one being how are these changes being chosen and decided upon? Some of them are so out of whack I question how someone playing the same game as me could possibly think they are good changes.

For example, the changes to Panzerfusiliers as well as the Soviet Airborne rocket strafe are two things I can't fathom for the life of me to make sense of. Now, perhaps you don't agree with me that 80 penetration for the rocket strafe is crippling for its cost as well as it being one of the defining abilities of the commander. But there seems to be quite a few things many in this community can agree on, such as the changes to partisans.

I am grateful that there is activity surrounding this game, truly. But there is a way to both take a bit off of the load of the balance team as well as take advantage of the unique conditions the state of the game allows.

We obviously have a very active community of die hards who somehow attract new players. How about interface with us, have weekly threads about suggestions or interaction threads where you can talk about proposed changes? Not only would that make this a community effort, but you would also be able to depend on us to help suggest change.

Just food for thought. I think depending on the staying power of the formula to keep people around is much weaker than taking this unique chance to sustain and help us flourish by just interacting in useful ways.

    Soviet Urban Assault Tactics

    Posted: 02 Apr 2021 11:52 AM PDT

Hey guys, with the news of the commander tweaks putting commander discussions in the radar, I figured I'd make another doctrine with my OT-34/85 idea, which was fairly well received and leading to a balance discussion that I feel was productive. The name, as loaned from the USF commander, is quite evocative, and accordingly, the doctrine is all about attacking in urban settings, meaning close quarters combat, and lots of tools to clear items and cover. While you're not limited to fighting in urban areas, this otherwise powerful general purpose commander may be found lacking in areas where you need ranged firepower. Here goes!

    0 CP: T-34/85

The basic T-34/85, no different than those found in other doctrines aside from the upgrade it can get. It's fairly reliant on getting close to make good use of its middle of the road penetration and MGs that scale dramatically as you close in, and so I feel it's an appropriate tank for an urban attack themed doctrine. KV-8 would also be appropriate, but we have an interesting counterpart to it here already.

    3 CP: Incendiary Weapons

T-34/85s can be upgraded to the OT-34/85 standard, replacing the powerful hull MG with a flamethrower, similar to one hose on the 251 halftrack, albeit perhaps a bit better. This upgrade also slows the tank down a fair bit.

Penal Batallions can do the Molotov Assault, which makes each member of the squad throw a molotov in the target area.

    4 CP: Repair Station

I feel that Repair Stations are underrated as they allow for much better vehicle upkeep at no overhead cost. They should be interesting to see in action together with T-34/85s, especially with the flamethrower variant provided by this doctrine.

    7 CP: Incendiary Artillery Barrage

A classic ability for Soviets that's unfortunately stuck in suboptimal doctrines. It fits very well within the context of an urban assault doctrine.

    8 CP: B4 Superheavy Artillery

In real life, the B4 was particularly effective in urban settings, and so I feel it would be appropriate for this doctrine too.

Classic Hotkey Bug for German Infantry Doctrine

    Posted: 02 Apr 2021 09:44 AM PDT

Panzergrenadiers upgraded with the repair package have the repair ability bound to the "R" key, which is the same key for reinforcing. This prevents reinforcing using the hotkey. This isn't an issue when classic hotkeys are disabled. (since they don't share a key)

What the fuck am I supposed to do against OKW as Soviet?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2021 03:40 AM PDT

I feel like they have better infantry units in the early game that scale insanely well into the late game

I feel like they have superior tanks on the end game.

I feel like they don't seem to have problem to match my number of units overall.

Every time I play against OKW as a Soviet I'm getting absolutely steamrolled continously to the point I just want to quit if I get matched with OKW.

I feel like soviet vs wermahct is much more balance, but against OKW its just a steamroll allthrough the game.

How on earth do I counter british arty. Nothing I do can counter it. He just places 4 arty emplacements and bofors, and 17 pounder. And bombs the hell outta me while I cant damn near get close as every time I amass a invasion force he uses his sniper to see and then bombs that, and the shells make my tank stunned for about a minute and at that point its already dead either from piats or his firefly. I have all the factions, and I cant do anything. Only thing I can think of is russian arty with the zis guns but he counter barrages me or I cant get my observer close enough. As some would say I have a sever case of mad cause bad. I've tried russian armor, partisans, arty, usf airborne, brit SAS. Someone help im loosing my damn mind.
