Impressions after almost finishing the single-player campaign

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:29 PM PDT

Maybe this won't generate most discussion here, given that most people in this sub focus mostly on the multiplayer, but I wanted to share what I thought about the singleplayer mode.

In particular, I feel that this is the most important addition to CoH3, given that most players buy RTS for the single-player. It makes me happy, then, that this might be one of the best campaigns in RTS games. It feels like it combines the best elements of Ardennes Assault, Dawn of War Dark Crusade and Total War.

I think one of the most interesting aspects is that it has a nice pace between Theatre of War combat and RTS missions, with a ratio probably around 7:3. RTS missions are infrequent enough that rather than becoming a chore, they feel more like a reward. Having varied and interesting mission designs also helps a lot, some missions asking you to defend a position, others to rout the enemy army, assassinate an enemy officer, help partisans and hopefully a lot more.

The advisers are also interesting. Towards the end of the campaign, one is pushing me to commit WAR CRIMES FUCK YEAH while other recommends a more restrained approach. Hopefully these will have some interesting repercussions, like having the mission become easier after comitting WAR CRIMES but losing partisan support. It's definitely a much better approach than the "soviets allies but bad" presented in CoH2's campaign.

All in all, I feel the campaign is off to a great start, and with some polish, it will bring many new players to the Company of Heroes franchise. A shame the campaign is currently only available in Easy mode, since I feel this diminishes the importance of solid strategy. I look forward to playing the full campaign on Hard mode.

I also found out some problems:

UX / UI (Theatre of War)

    • The delay when panning the camera at the edge of the screen is terrible

Please get rid of it, or at least have an option to disable it.

    • The movement is so damned slow

Both allied and enemy movement is slow, and you can't do anything until the animation finishes playing out. Please have a fast mode.

    • The camera could be better

Sometimes one unit or their decorator gets in the way of another unit. Being able to rotate horizontally is nice, but also allow rotating vertically, to the point it's possible to view the map on a completely top-down perspective.

    • Selecting where to move each unit is a bit of a pain in the ass

The movement seems tile-based, maybe using a hex grid. It can be a pain in the ass figuring out where you can or can't move. Having the actual grid lines showing would probably help a lot.

    • Moving units, in general, could be better

If your unit gets ambushed, after getting ambushed it will keep moving as if nothing happened. It would be better if your unit stopped and you could choose to keep moving, counter-attack, move another unit or something else. An undo button would also be a lot of help when you misclick.

    • Ambushes suck a bit

Maybe I'm missing something, but I didn't find a way to prevent being ambushed. I'd expect a recon unit or something to be able to spot them, but I didn't find one. Worse, they keep disappearing when you change units, making them a real pain in the ass to deal with. And maybe it's because the campaign is on easy, or maybe it's because the campaign is more of an invasion, but setting ambushes against the PC seems pretty worthless.

    • Pathfinding problems

Sometimes the movement marker would show a path, I'd click and then the unit would stop after showing a "can't find path" message. Quite frustrating.

    Game-breaking bugs

    • Theatre of war stuck on enemy turn, had to force-close the game. Game gets stuck on loading when trying to load the campaign.

The reason I almost finished the singleplayer campaign is because, right before the last mission (Monte Cassino), the game got stuck on the enemy's turn. When reloading it stays forever on the loading screen. The campaign allows saving in multiple slots, yet the main menu only allows continuing the campaign from the last save or starting a new one. Guess I'll just restart the campaign... sigh

    Other Bugs

    • First airport mission (RTS) crashed halfway through.
    • Second airport mission (RTS) crashed after completion or didn't end after completing objectives, making me restart the mission. Had to win 4 times until it worked
    • A mortar unit (Theatre of war) was at the same time on the map and inside a Company, neither could be moved.
    • Medics can't heal detachments? Their description says "can heal detachments and companies", yet I couldn't heal detachments.

    General Bugs

    • Mouse clamping is on, but my mouse keeps escaping to my second monitor when in fullscreen (this also happened occasionally in CoH2).

    Pacific Theater Discussion

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 07:55 AM PDT

So, CoH3 is set in the Med/NA and I couldn't be happier. Great choice for the game. That being said, the devs said they considered the Pacific, but the disparity in combat power between the US and Japanese forces would mean sacrificing authenticity for balance, as they would need to buff the Japanese faction too much.

I'm not so sure that is right. CoH depicts battles between less than a hundred infantry, with a few AFVs and off map thrown in. Very small engagements by WW2 standards. It would be perfectly authentic to have such a force able to go toe to toe with the US.

For a CoH infantry engagement you need infantry with rifles and all manner of grenades, mortars, LMGs, AT guns, and SMGs. We can quibble about relative quality, but the fact is the Japanese had them, they were effective, and they were well trained in how to use them. Certainly US and UK vets had enormous respect for Japanese fighting ability.

Same with off map. For most of the war the Japanese retained the ability to have air strikes and shore bombardments or whatever else the devs could put in.

Armor is the obvious area where a Japanese faction would need to stretch, but not by much for matches th size of CoH. The top US tank in the Pacific was the Sherman. It outmatched the Japanese medium Chi-ha tank, but the Japanese did develop and build better tanks (the Chi-nu and Chi-to) with a 75mm gun that were not deployed that the devs could use as an equivalent. Not saying the Japanese had actual armor parity in WW2, but close enough for the devs to be creative without it being ridiculous. CoH is not a sim, it's not Combat Mission, so some stretching I'd fine.

Anyway, I'd love to see a Pacific Theater, either as a standalone or an expansion. You could have IJA, IJN, US Army, US Marines, and UK Commonwealth. Maybe someday!

Does anyone have an AutoHotkey file to share for WASD camera movement in COH3?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 09:54 PM PDT

Sadly, Relic still haven't learned that many of us want WASD camera movement like modern RTS games like Total War, RUSE, ect. We are forced to use AutoHot Key script.... Tried converting the auto hotkey script that I use for COH2, but I can't seem to get it to work. Has anyone had any luck? Please share how to do it. Thanks!

    Getting ready for COH3

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 09:40 PM PDT

So, the recent pandemic amongst other things has caused the prices in hardware to rise. I've been a solid COH gamer since its first release waaaaay back in September 29, 2006.

Lately I've been looking to upgrade my old gaming rig, and although some specs have been released:

Company of Heroes 3 recommended system requirements:

    OS: Windows 10 64-bit

CPU: Intel i7 4 core processor, 8th Generation [Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3500]

    RAM: 8GB

    GPU RAM: 8GB

GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 or [AMD Radeon RX Vega 56]

    Storage: 8GB

    (quoted from https://www.game-debate.com/amp/news/30964/newsAmpPage.html)

... I guess we all know that a competitive RTS like COH can take its toll on any player with a less than higher end setup.

So my question is, are any of you guys looking to upgrade for the coming full release, what are you looking for specifically related to high performance in competitive COH3?

My top post I made on CoH3 years ago

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 05:03 PM PDT

It has been years since my last post here, but CoH3 has brought the fire for this game to a new level. Here is my #1 post on this sub, I could link to the past but I'll just do this instead and paste it here:

If CoH3 is made, it should really be based on both games. CoH2 is far superior in the UI department and little things like hurdling and true sight are excellent features. CoH1 was produced in a much stabler environment and it shows compared to CoH2's difficult birth after the fall of THQ.

I think the hardest thing Relic will deal with is compromising with SEGA on how to generate revenue outside of just buying the game. The commander system in CoH2 is a direct result of SEGA meddling as well as the skins, faceplates, and whatnot. I seriously doubt we will see a commander system like CoH1 ever again. The question is whether they can come up with an innovative compromise that will satisfy both the SEGA higher ups and we the gamers.

CoH1 had a MUCH better multiplayer environment in terms of custom lobbies, in-game leaderboards, basic match system, global chat, and ease of use. CoH2 is not even close to its quality and CoH2 has only had the setup we see now since 2015.

At the end of the day, I just want the best of CoH1 and 2 put together in a slightly modified presentation (Africa, Italy, or whatever) with full support and an optimized engine. I just hope SEGA doesn't fuck it up.

    • My sentiment years ago is ringing loud and clear in coh3 and I am super pumped. I still play regularly, but even in my advanced age I plan to git gud... See you all out there soon and I can't wait for the multiplayer.

    COH3 Breach mechanic discussion.

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 11:26 PM PDT

    How it works:

A unit with the Breach ability (flamers and infantry squads with grenades), gets into door range of the house, triggers the ability, which costs about as many munitions as a grenade.

After a short delay, they instantly kill the squad inside and seize the garrison.

    EDIT:

Personally, I think its a bit one-sided, and still prone to the same Gamey-ness as Coh2 garrisons, but in the opposite direction.

    EDIT:

Actually, Breaching deals a Grenade worth of damage, and then forces the enemy squad out of the building. I never noticed because I was blobbing against the AI, so usually their troops would die from the nade. That said, I stand by my below suggestion. Full nade worth of damage+shots on them as they retreat will usually equal a wipe, and especially if they were damaged at all before the breach goes off.

    My suggestion:

I suggest instead have a system, where all infantry can Breach, and the ability is free.

The squad enters the building, then the squads inside the house have a gunfight, with either side being able to abandon the house, but not from the direction that the enemy entered from.

This would make Garrisons into a more natural piece of terrain that is fought over in a natural way, rather than a special "gamey" zone governed by special Gamey rules. Under Coh2's rules, Garrisons are basically super-fortresses, and under Coh3's alpha rules, they alternate between this or an utter deathtrap depending on what enemy squads are in the area.

What are your thoughts on the breach mechanic?

Why is Italy not a faction in COH3?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 02:02 PM PDT

From the description, it's going to be US and UK vs Germany. No mention of Italy as a faction even though it's in Italy. Are they planning to add Italy in the future or is it just going to be Germany again?

Do your build orders change depending on the size of the game? (eg. 1v1 vs 2v2 vs 3v3)

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 05:05 PM PDT

I play exclusively 4v4s because I care less about winning and more about the chaos and scale. When I see people talk about build orders they mostly seem to be referencing 1v1s. Would you change these at all as matches get bigger?

My Observations from the gameplay we were given

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 12:13 AM PDT

1: some of the US voicelines are the original sentence from the US in Coh2 but with another voice, ex: "cut that infantry down!!" "Drop those kraut bastards!!" "Nail their infantries" "move, goddammit!!"... personally i would love if they use both the new voice and the old voice from the US coh2, the old voice also did a splendid job imo.

2: if you click on the grenadier squad of the axis, you will see on the description that they CAN MERGE, and seems to have more models than the usual mainline Brits.....remember which unit can do that in coh2?...now i believe there are 2 ways to look at this considering the context:

    (1) the grenadiers are so well trained that they can do a bit of everything, that way they can always be a complementary force to any specialist units ( this theory adheres to the Ost coh2 design in which the grens are professionally trained )

    (2) the grenadiers are not the one we remembered, they now are composed also of the italian cons, which means that they have less training and fighting exp, meaning that they should only be expect to support or use in large numbers ( this theory adheres to the fact that the only unit in coh2 that have this ability is the cons, and is also solidified by the fact that the grens squad in coh3 has 6 models compared to the brits mainline inf......any historians here can give their expertise?

3: side armor is a thing now....be more careful guys

4: sappers/ pios/ ....engies as a whole arent required to tech up anymore, make the order and a bunch of guys from your HQ will magically appear and do the work for you

5 US can field themselves armor ( chafee ) from the 5-6 min mark, prob the same in the other factions, remember this min mark

6 ragdoll effects seem to have improved quite a lot, tho they still have the weird auto realign to coded corspe after-effect thingies. Might not be sth you guys care but i like it.

7 apparently when the snare got ricochetted, they will still stun the vehicle

8 seems that inf retreat speed when pressed has been slowed down, meaning that we are going to have to press that button a lil earlier -> which means we got to make our ability to recognise a losing engagement sooner

Will edit if sth new pops up.

Edit1:9 medic scooping up corpses are a thing as shown in the trailer, a rollback to coh1 but idk if they will use the same system as coh1 or sth else. The infamous flak 88 also made a return to the series

10 Breaching mechanic has given some part of the community a bit of an arcady feel.....one of the redditor on here has given an example of how this mechanic can turn cheesy ( look up Atomic_gandhi breach mechanic discussion)

Edit2: 11 vehicle destruction system ( specially tanks ) seems to have gone to a different route, rather than the usual blow-up animation in Coh2 ( tank get killed -> tank take 1 second lurching opposite to the shot direction -> tank blows up completely and get turned into a burning brown crisp ), they seems to be more on the internal combustion side ( you can see this one happens in coh2, although a lil uncommon compared to the one aforementioned: tank get killed -> spurt of flame comes wooshing out from the cupola due to ammunition combustion/ engine fuel burn or sth -> end of the sequence tank turns into a wreck that cant be run through by other vehicles)

So why should you care about this? You should because the money sit on this "A WRECK THAT CANT BE RUN THROUGH BY OTHER VEHICLES" this could potentially create a problem of a small passageway being blocked by dead tank husk, sth that can exacerbate due to the urban settings. Granted (and this i hope) that maybe live tank will be able to push the dead tank husk away or just go through it normally like in Coh2 ( which would be weird due to these dead tanks not having been sufficiently destroyed ) but i havent seen these instances happening yet
