Hey Reddit. Here's our latest CoH-Dev design doc. (I'll try to be better about posting these here.) This is a quick overview of the range of systems and features we've designed to help us create authentic, compelling stories. Find it here. [EDIT: You can also find an index of all our design docs here.]

Why the Valentine Archer in CoH3

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:30 AM PDT

So the pre-alpha is about to close and most people seem to only care about the graphical style, or lack of Italian faction or the British getting the prototype Black Prince that never made it active service at all let alone in 1943.

I however, only care about one issue:

The British Valentine Archer is backwards.

In reality the gun faces to the rear of the vehicle. It was designed to setup, fire and retreat before anything could shoot back.

A quick history: is that mid WWII the British loved the 17 pounder so much they tried stick it to every tank chassis they had regardless to whether it could fit nicely or not. The Sherman firefly is the famous one. But there was also the A30 Challenger based on the Cromwell, the 17pdr Achilles based on the M10 Wolverine and the Black prince which technically new but is really just a bigger Churchill.

The Valentine chassis was far too small to even have modified turrent that could hold a 17pdr so it was mounted straight on to the hull. And to keep the tank short it was mounted backwards with the barrel pointing over the rear engine deck. These vehicles were then classified as self propelled guns and given to the Royal Artillery. Setting them up in defensive positions ahead of time, firing their shots and then retreating fast since they didn't have to turn around to move at full speed.

In CoH3 the vehicle's forwards direction is were the gun faces, which is historically wrong. If this was reversed I can't see much of an issue with how it plays. The archer seems designed to setup defensively to shoot and scoot because of it's ability to get a buff after being stationary for a period of time. Armour wise I have no idea what it's like in game but historically the armour was basically the same (not much at all) on all sides so orientation shouldn't actually matter very much.

I get that this probably isn't the most important issue, but I think the quirks of individual vehicles and units are what make even similar units across different factions interesting like how the OKW flak halftrack and the USF AA halftrack are now. It also just adds a little bit of authenticity to the vehicle which is hardly one of the most famous WWII vehicles.

TLDR: The Archer's forwards direction IRL is the opposite to where the gun faces. It's the wrong way around in CoH3 and I care way too much about this.

    Offline skirmish won't work

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 05:32 PM PDT

I want to play CoH2 offline, but whenever I click on custom game it says "the host of this game has selected a map that is too small to accommodate all players". I'm running Steam in offline mode. Anyone know how to fix this?

    Opinion on breach

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 04:32 PM PDT

I feel like it's a fancy solution to a problem that stems from different mechanic, which is ability for non heavy weapon team to teleport in and out of the building to "dodge" grenades and still benefit from said building while staying completely unharmed.

If Relic wants to have solid way of punishing someone who commits to using neutral building, the easiest way would be giving every unit set up time both for entering and leaving the building, meaning that's it's now a commitment you have to weigh and compare to heavy cover.

Because breach brings only one thing to the table, it forces you to leave and forbids from coming back if your squad can't breach, but then we are back to COH2 style of teleporting in and out in case of enemy counter grenades.

Anyone else taking forever to get into a 3v3 or 4v4 game?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 08:12 PM PDT

This has happened more times than I can count. Am I doing something wrong or are these medics just sloppy?

CoH2 Using more than 2 Mods

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 04:51 PM PDT

So i want to use the "All Units Added Mod" with the "More pop cap" mod, so far all good, but i cant use a third mod (an ai mod). Is there any way to make it possible to play with three mods? Like maybe combining 2 mods or something.

British 5 man as standard ?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 11:05 AM PDT

Would that be to op or could it be balance by making the squads a little bit more expensive each?

The call in squads come also as 5 man all and cost the same so I don't think it would be a good buff for the Brits.

The fuel cost be transferred to the cost of later tier's.

    CoH2 unbalanced?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 08:20 AM PDT

Is it me only, or the state of the game right now is too bias towards the axis?
For a couple of weeks now everything seems to have changed, all game dominating gas and other points, and suddenly mid-late game german armor is crazy...

    What to do?

    Wouldn't it be cool

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 03:36 PM PDT

If they balanced the game so allies didn't just have to spam basic infantry at mid tier ranks 2v2 and have a guarantee of controlling the map for the entire game?

Just a tiny buff to make grenadiers actually...you know, useful, would be swell.

    Just something to consider.

    COH3 Mod Support?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 11:20 PM PDT

Does anyone know whether there will be actual mod support for the new game coming out? Looking back at COH2, I noticed the mods were absolutely awful. First off, there are essentially almost no decent mods available, the game only allows you to pick one mod at a time, and none of them even work on single-player (which is absurd, considering that's all I play). Please tell me this won't be the case with COH3.

    Cannot use Pathfinders, bugged?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:28 AM PDT

I'm sure that this has been posted repeatedly, but there is a bug where I can't deploy my pathfinders with airborne on ardennes assault. LT is deployed, but the option remains greyed out. Does devs even look at this reddit to fix things? -_-
